HELICOPTER CRASHES NEAR MOUNT EVEREST KILLING THREE

The crash which happened at Lukla airport which is the main gateway to the Everest region and reputed to be one of the most difficult in the world for takeoffs and landings involved a small plane and two helicopters.

The small plane veered off the runway and hit two helicopters while taking off on Sunday killing three people and injuring three, officials at the Lukla airport said.

A co-pilot of the turbo-prop LET-410 plane run by Summit Air bound for Kathmandu and a police officer on the ground were killed on the spot.

Another policeman died later in the hospital, a police spokesman confirmed. The plane slipped towards the helipad during takeoff and collided with two helicopters. The injured have been taken to Kathmandu for treatment. The cause of the accident is yet to be ascertained.Lukla airport is used by thousands of climbers and trekkers heading for the Everest region each year and it is particularly usually busy in April when the spring mountain climbing season begins.
