THE NEW TREND OF LOOTING AT THE SCENE OF ACCIDENT IN EASTERNCAPE/SOUTHAFRICA IS DISTURBING

The disturbing incident of South African citizens not sensitive to the plight of accident victims but rather robbing them has become a trending occurrence all over South Africa.
Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana has come out strongly against a disturbing trend of looting and sporadic incidents of robbing the injured at the scene of crashes across the province.   Most recently looters descended on a burning truck on the N2 between emaXesibeni (Mt Ayliff) and Kwa-Bhaca (Mt Frere) on Sunday.

The articulated truck caught fire after a tyre burst and crowds gathered at the scene. Hordes of looters risked the flames to steal the clothing items from the burning vehicle.   MEC Tikana said this trend had to stop.

“This is the kind of risky and irresponsible behaviour on the province’s roads we wish to condemn with all the contempt it deserves. People continue to show no respect for accident scenes and no concern for the dead and even the injured, often robbing them instead of assisting them.

“What is very concerning about this incident is that it comes barely a week after 69 people died while looting a fuel tanker in Tanzania,” said Tikana.
